The Story Behind Vanessa's Emmy Night Surprise! -SID
May 2004

GH's alumna-turned-Las Vegas star Vanessa Marcil shares with SID how a decade old dream led her to host this year's Daytime Emmy's.

When approached by the show's producers, Marcil tells us "My initial reaction was, "Yes! I was astounded that they were even asking me. But then I thought 'I can't host the Emmys. Usually funny people host.' Some people tell me I'm funny, but I think it's accidental," she laughs.

The original plan was for Marcil- who in 2003 took home her first Emmy- to co-host with Dr. Phil. When he dropped out making the gig a solo one, she says, "I took a pass. Hosting by yourself is a workload, and I didn't think it would work out in my schedule." (She also was in town for the NBC upfront presentations.)

It was then that a member of daytime royalty sent me a message. "I dreamed about the first time I went to the Emmys," she said. At that time and in her dream, the GH newbie was backstage, in awe, yet also upset about having to add extensions (per ABC's demand) to her newly cropped hair before presenting. "They were clipping on these horrible hairpieces when Oprah, who is the most amazing, inspirational woman, sat next to me. She asked me how I was doing, and when I told her about my hair, she looked into my eyes and told me to relax, this in the big scheme of things, it didn't really matter."

Marcil was moved by Oprah, whose recalled words gave her the push she needed to host the 2004 fete. "I woke up the next morning and thought, 'I need to do this, I'm going to hang out with the group of people that I still love most in the world, including those I owe my career to, like Maurice Benard and Tony Geary. That can't ever be the wrong decision."

There's also a cute little picture of Vanessa in her Emmy dress from last year. The caption reads:
Pre-Emmys, dear friend Tyler Christopher text messaged Vanessa. "He said, 'Guess what, I'm presenting!! Will you be there?' I said, 'Yeah, I might. I'm hosting! '"
